108 SUN SALUTATIONS…WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT?
YOGA SOL Live Music Event with Amy Valdez & Seth Pincus Sat 6/21 2pm!
Yoga Sol students have been asking what this is all about – 108 sounds daunting – but the prospect of a live music event is intriguing. Yogis have long been doing these events in big numbers all over the world – typically to celebrate a new season – to cleanse, embrace courage, and to clarify intention.
Yoga Sol’s event is a little different. Amy has crafted the format to present a sustainable progression of the 108 Sun Salutations – creatively accessible to all levels.
Here we are, looking forward to June 21st, summer solstice. It is the day with the most sunlight. The idea is we celebrate the light by saluting the sun! Life would not be possible without the sun. Because of the increasing light from the sun our bodies also absorb more energy. Think of our bodies as being solar panels absorbing more energy as the days grow longer and longer. At the height of the sun’s light and our own increasing energy we will set out to do our very own 108 SUN SALUTATIONS! It is akin to running a marathon. You know it will be a challenge. You know you are going to be sore after but it’s more about getting through it than coming in first place.
I’ve done 108 Sun Salutations twice. The first time was about 15 years ago. I was new to yoga. The studio I called home at the time was offering an event called 108 Sun Salutations. To be honest, I didn’t know what it was. I just knew the teacher and I trusted him. So I went. We did exactly what the name states. My teacher cued each one and he kept count. I just kept listening to his voice and moving until it was time for savasana. That was always my favorite part anyway. I like to say that I will go through anything in a class because at the end I know there will be savasana. The next day I was sore, my arms and shoulders, but in a good way. I had done something. It was an accomplishment. The second time was about a year after with another teacher that I trusted. I remember she used mini pumpkins to keep count. One pumpkin for each set of twelve sun salutes, nine little pumpkins altogether. I wasn’t as sore but felt just as accomplished. In fact, by the second one I was starting to feel a new kind of confidence, of strength. I don’t just mean physical strength. It was transformative.
The Significance of “108”
Why, do you ask, do we do 108 of them? Good question. Google can answer that. My personal favorite is that the distance to the sun is 108 times that of the earth. In other words, we need to travel the earth 108 times to reach the sun. Some of those travels are easy and some are not. Some of the sun salutations will feel easy some will not. The journey is individual. But if we travel together, breathe together, stay on the path together we will make it to the other side. That’s how it is in life and that’s how it will be when we partake together the ancient practice of 108 Sun Salutations to honor the great light.
Moving with breath is energizing and when we move together to live music it is even more so. Think of it like a dance, a yogi party, a sun celebration. Seth Pincus, on the Australian instrument called the didgeridoo, will be providing sacred vibrations while we move.
Seth will literally bathe us with vibrations. He will join me on the guitar to bring us to a restful savasana.
Remember, just as in all classes, modifications are always good! Even in 108 Sun Salutations. We will offer alternatives so the practice is accessible to all. Even in a group endeavor we can be who we are, individuals, personal practice in a public space. In this event we will follow the Global Mala format as set forth by my teacher, Shiva Rea, breaking up the 108 into 4 groups of 27. We will meditate before each set of 27 starting with a meditation for your own personal growth, then for someone you care about who needs your dedication, followed my a meditation for our community and finally a meditation for the world.
