CREATING SUMMER MEMORIES
July has always been my favorite month of the year. The poetic magic of the season is best described by some of the literary quotes that I share and the end of the blog.
For me, the real magic of summer is creating and re-living the best of summer of memories. The beauty in nature, the longer days, and the warmth of the sun, all set the stage to create special memories with those we love.
When I was a kid, my parents took all of five of us daughters to The Beach Cottages in Pacific Beach, San Diego. For over ten years, we vacationed every summer in the same locale, enjoying the beach, the simple pleasures of shuffle board, ping pong, afternoon ice creams and summer night barbeques. It is such a vivid memory for the Englehart family, that we all went back with our extended families in 2003 to celebrate our parent’s 50th wedding anniversary. Eleven years later, our dad has passed and our mom is living with memory and physical challenges. We find great joy in re-living those carefree days back at The Beach Cottages. I returned to The Beach Cottages last week with my sister Janice and my niece Petra and we had the best time! Janice & Petra live in Guangzhou, China and relished every moment on beach, in the sun and of course – in the Mexican restaurants (they don’t get much in China). The best of times!
July also brings romantic sentiment for me and my hubby/co-owner of Yoga Sol, Garry Haverland. We met on July 26th 2002 at Ocean Blvd. Café in Santa Monica, were engaged July 26th 2003 at Point Lobos in Monterey, and were married July 24th 2004. (Pictured left- R&G wedding day at Porter Valley Country Club). In the spirit of re-living and creating memories, we’ll celebrate our 10th anniversary with California’s beautiful summer backdrop in a few weeks!
Since most of us don’t have all those carefree days we had when we were young, I say it is even more important to carve out a little time to enjoy and create those special memories. Even the short visits work. We just enjoyed a few days in Austin with youngest granddaughter Sophia (and of course, parents Kelly & Aaron). So enjoy the little trips, the day trips and the celebratory meals!
Another great summer night is local theater – one of our favorites! Don’t miss our very own local Shakespeare in the Park – Shakespeare Orange County. Yoga Sol member, Evelyn Case wowed us last summer with her performance as Lady Macbeth and we understand she is back in showcase roles this summer. If you haven’t experienced this beautiful professional theater in Garden Grove, you will truly be impressed. You feel transported into another time and place under the stars, surrounded by trees. I’m checking out A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Romeo and Juliet. http://shakespeareoc.org/current-season/
Garry & I are season ticket holders at the Chance Theater in Anaheim Hills. We’re bringing our China family this week to their performance of the Tony Award winning musical In The Heights. New location for the theater troop. http://chancetheater.com/
If you are thinking, what does this have to do with yoga…Everything! Yoga is about finding balance and clarity and I believe these summer times restore our bodies and spirit in a way that we can truly rejuvenate be our best selves. Do your consistent yoga practice and enjoy summer!
Summer inspirations by the literary masters:
Summer is the time when one sheds one’s tensions with one’s clothes, and the right kind of day is jeweled balm for the battered spirit. A few of those days and you can become drunk with the belief that all’s right with the world.
— Ada Louise Huxtable
Then followed that beautiful season… Summer….
Filled was the air with a dreamy and magical light; and the landscape
Lay as if new created in all the freshness of childhood.
— Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
“Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass under trees on a summer’s day, listening to the murmur of the water, or watching the clouds float across the sky, is by no means a waste of time.”
― John Lubbock, The Use Of Life
“Summer, after all, is a time when wonderful things can happen to quiet people. for those few months, you’re not required to be who everyone thinks you are, and that cut-grass smell in the air and the chance to dive into the deep end of a pool give you a courage you don’t have the rest of the year. You can be grateful and easy, with no eyes on you, and no past. Summer just opens the door and lets you out.”
― Deb Caletti, Honey, Baby, Sweetheart
“Summertime is always the best of what might be.”
― Charles Bowden
“All in all, it was a never-to-be-forgotten summer — one of those summers which come seldom into any life, but leave a rich heritage of beautiful memories in their going — one of those summers which, in a fortunate combination of delightful weather, delightful friends and delightful doing, come as near to perfection as anything can come in this world.”
― L.M. Montgomery, Anne’s House of Dreams
There shall be eternal summer in the grateful heart. ~Celia Thaxter
