Yoga FAQs

What is Yoga?

Yoga is an ancient art, science, and physical practice that is equally empowering in our modern life today. Yoga translates to “union” and is intended to unify body, mind, emotions, and spirit into harmonious health. This happens through the linking of breath with physical movement, ultimately leading to the overall benefits of more strength, flexibility, mental focus, and balance.

I go to church and I’m not a vegetarian. Will I feel comfortable at YOGA SOL?

Yes! Yoga is not a religion, but a practice. Yoga does not require that you be anything other than what and who you are. There is no deity and no prayer. YOGA SOL honors everyone’s individual religious beliefs and cultural backgrounds. At YOGA SOL, we strive to deliver all the benefits of yoga in an environment where our students will always feel comfortable. (And we like a tasty burger now and then, too!)

I’m not very flexible. Will I be able to do yoga?

Absolutely! Everyone comes to the practice with varying degrees of flexibility. Some are born naturally flexible and others have to work a little longer to attain their optimum flexibility. A regular yoga practice will definitely increase your flexibility. Flexibility is just one of the many benefits of yoga you will enjoy, regardless of whether or not you can touch your toes.

Is yoga safe for my “not so fit” body?

Yes, yoga is safe when practiced with awareness and focused alignment. At YOGA SOL, your personal safety is our highest priority. Our skilled teachers are highly trained in anatomy and physiology and instruct with a keen watchfulness to your knee, back, and shoulder safety. Poses are adapted to each individual student, often with the use of props.

I have always been active, but now have a problem with my back/shoulder/neck/knee, etc. Can YOGA SOL help?

Yoga has proven therapeutic benefits when skillfully applied. Please speak to your teacher before class if you have an injury or other on-going physical concerns so that he or she can direct you appropriately. The instructor’s guidance on finding proper alignment will not only keep you safe, but will also lead to a stronger, healthier, and more joyful yoga practice. Our teachers are knowledgeable and we are here to help you. At the same time, we ask that you take good care to not to push to a place of pain or injury.

I want to lose weight, reduce stress, increase strength, and gain flexibility. How often should I practice yoga?

The more yoga you do, the more positive changes you’ll notice. Some students benefit from as little as one class a week while others practice daily. Our students will tell you that they feel their best with a consistent 2-3 times a week practice. And we will tell you…. Yoga is the Journey. Practice is the Path.

I’m intimidated by yoga. What if everyone is more advanced than I am?

We’ve all been there! Walking into your first (or second, or third!) yoga class can feel intimidating. Yoga is non-competitive, which means that you are not competing against anyone—even yourself. We all do what we can do with who we are in the moment. Our friendly instructors are trained to teach varying levels of ability and experience within the same class while creating a supportive learning environment where everyone feels comfortable working at their own level. YOGA SOL instructors will demonstrate how to modify poses, or might give hands-on adjustment in the course of teaching the entire group. You are always invited to skip a pose or take a break. Child’s pose or any other rest pose is always available to you. Please feel free to ask questions and remember…everyone started with a first class!

Are there really other men in class?

Yes! We are increasingly seeing more and more men in class. They love it.

Can I really get a decent workout?

Oh, yes! Appropriate class selection and working with your instructor to truly go deeper in your poses can result in significant personal challenge and accomplishment. Take a look at our Schedule and Descriptions and see what’s right for you. You just need to show up and experience.

What do I wear? What do I need to bring?

Dress in comfortable clothes that move. Most women wear athletic pants and fitted tops, as they stay in place when moving. Big T-shirts and looser-fitting tops are not ideal for bending over. Men usually wear loose-fitting athletic pants or shorts with a drawstring or elastic waist and comfortable shirts or tanks. For sanitary reasons, we suggest you purchase and use your own mat. We do offer them for rent if you aren’t quite ready to commit to your own.
